“Could you hand me those Barbie dolls?” my son asked.
“Sure,” I replied, trying to hide my surprise. Not surprise that he would play with Barbies—even my brother had one that he would carry everywhere while he trailed after me. But until now, my son had completely neglected these dolls. Suddenly he was asking for them in the middle of our bedtime routine.
He took the white Barbie and handed me the Black Barbie.
“Tell my Barbie that she is beautiful,” he instructed.
“You are beautiful,” I replied.
“Tell Barbie that you love her.”
“I love you, Barbie.”
“Now ask her to marry you.”
“Barbie, will you marry me?”
“Yes. Now we kiss.” We put the dolls together and made smacking sounds. Then he showed me where to lay them next to him in bed and the three of them dozed off.
Thus the first wedding my son ever performed was an interracial, same-sex marriage.
There are some things I love about 2023.

Beautiful.
Good for you for having the foresight to provide him with the tools (in this case a pair of Barbies, one Black, one white) to enable this momentous occasion!
